You’re looking at it the Citroen C4 Cactus. It’s certifiably one of the quirkiest and coolest looking cars on the market. And, it’s coming to Australia at the end of the we couldn’t wait for it to arrive in Australia, we jumped behind the wheel of the C4 Cactus in Queenstown, New Zealand, to see if all the hype around its local arrival is in 10 body colours and four 'airbump' colours, the Citroen C4 Cactus is available with two petrol and one diesel engine option. While pricing hasn’t been announced for the Australian market, it’s expected to start around the $25,000 mark and will compete against cars like the Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, Renault Captur and Peugeot components called airbumps, featuring on the sides and edges of the car, were designed to protect the C4 Cactus from accidental damage at shopping centres and car parks. The car’s airbumps don’t require maintenance and are made of a highly durable thermoplastic polyurethane material designed to resist impact roof rails flank the gigantic panoramic glass roof that stretches almost the entire length of the car. Cleverly, the panoramic glass roof is thermally insulated and acoustically designed to remove the need for a sliding blind, which also saves up to 6kg of of weight, in some configurations, the C4 Cactus weighs in at less than one tonne — considering the size of the car, that’s the bonnet, the C4 Cactus is available with two engine types petrol and diesel. Producing 55kW, 60kW and 82kW of power in three-cylinder turbocharged petrol form, the diesel option is a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 63kW of power. Available gearboxes include a five- and six-speed manual and six-speed automated turbocharged diesel test car was mated to a six-speed robotised clutchless manual gearbox, producing 63kW of power and 230Nm of torque. While it’s more than the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke, it sits behind the Renault Captur’s 377-litre are known for their excellent ride quality, and the C4 Cactus is no exception. Our New Zealand road trip included suburban driving, along with a stint to the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground, which required snow chains — and woollen ride stood true to Citroen’s comfort oriented philosophy. Bumps and rough surfaces were dispatched with ease and the pliant damping kept the ride smooth. Even the handling on some of the icy mountain roads was impressive with the electrically-assisted steering rack offering ample amounts of feel and strong diesel engine offered impressive in-gear acceleration for overtaking and climbing mountain the entire package was let down by the robotised manual gearbox. While a robotised manual requires pre-emptive throttle lift to avoid jerkiness, even this wasn’t enough to prevent unpleasant lapses in torque during gear was made even worse when pulling out in traffic where throttle lifting wasn’t possible, or when the gearbox would kick down during a tight hairpin turn on a mountain road where second wouldn’t offer enough torque, but first would sit too high in the rev the move, the gearbox is fine, but it’s one worth avoiding if you don’t mind shifting manually Citroen C4 Cactus is the ultimate in cool and quirky motoring. En l’absence de packs de personnalisation, cette finition haute Intens s’habille même de plastiques sombres et durs, à peine réchauffés par quelques touches de noir brillant sur la console centrale et le volant. Et on y est séduit, avec une planche de bord au design plus moderne, dominée comme chez Renault par la présence d’un écran tactile au centre et dotée d’une jolie boîte à gants évoquant l’univers de la bagagerie. Cette dernière occupe d’ailleurs l’espace libéré par l’airbag passager, qui a migré dans le pavillon. D’autres détails de style tapent dans l’œil comme les sièges bicolores larges, dont le moelleux rappellera de bons souvenirs aux Citroënistes », ou encore les élégantes lanières en guise de poignées de portières. Mais si l’esthétique est une chose importante, le reste a été négligé. La qualité des assemblages est médiocre, comme en témoigne ce levier de réglage en hauteur du siège qui nous est resté dans les mains ! En outre, le volant non ajustable en profondeur complique la recherche d’une bonne position de conduite. Quant aux places arrière, elles sont peu accueillantes, notamment à cause de la garde au toit réduite et aussi par la présence de simples vitres à compas qui s’entrebâillent claustrophobes s’abstenir ! Le C4 Cactus doit aussi se contenter d’une banquette arrière monobloc rabattable et sans doute rédhibitoire pour de nombreux clients pour qui la modularité est indispensable, ou encore d’un toit en verre certes traité anti-UV mais sans rideau occultant. Un C4 Cactus aux lacunes surprenantes Enfin, coté équipement, la présence de technologies dernier cri GPS, assistant de créneau, caméra de recul n’excusent pas de surprenantes lacunes les vitres avant électriques sont ainsi dépourvues de commande séquentielle, les sièges n’ont pas de réglage lombaire, le compte-tours brille par son absence et l’éclairage intérieur est quasiment inexistant. En comparaison, le Captur a quelque chose de plus rassurant, de plus rationnel, avec sa banquette arrière fractionnable et même coulissante, et son coffre plus spacieux et aussi plus facile à charger. Bref, les acheteurs avant tout pragmatiques le préféreront au Cactus, qui ne se distingue pas en confort de roulement, de bon niveau dans les deux cas.
